Oh no! There’s been a HUGE mix-up at the pretzel factory and the pretzels are popping out of the machine in weird flavors! And the worst part is that no one discovered it before they were shipped to the stores. Write or draw (or both!) a story about what happens when different people taste these unexpected flavors.

Here are some things to think about if you need some inspiration:

  1. What are some of the weirdest flavor combinations you can think of for a pretzel?
  2. Do your pretzels have different shapes and colors?
  3. Do your strange pretzels have magical powers as well?
  4. Who is the first to discover the mix-up?
  5. And finally, who finally figures out how to fix the mix-up and how do they do it? (Maybe it's you!)

Now let's shake things up with some family fun. Take turns reading or talking about your story, then enjoy some real pretzel fun by diving into one or more of the following adventures.

Twist & Shout Pretzel Adventures
  1. Log Cabins. Build some log cabins by stacking or connecting pretzel sticks. You can use peanut butter or marshmallow fluff as “cement.”  You can “glue” them together with hardening cookie icing.
  2. Twisted Clay. Create a pretzel out of brown playdough or clay. Use white clay to create little balls of salt.
  3. Pretzel Factory. Create a pretzel factory on your kitchen table with twisted pretzels or sticks (or both!) and have kids dip them in different colors of chocolate or frosting. Bonus if you add sprinkles!
  4. Crunchy Gifts. Make some pretzel gifts for the people in your life that don’t always get noticed, like a teacher or a neighbor. Simply dip pretzel rods in vanilla or chocolate bark (melted), and add sprinkles. Be sure to keep them fresh in food-grade treat bags. You can also arrange them into a small bouquet or place them in a decorative box.
  5. Pretzel Prayer. Create your own pretzel prayer. Holding a pretzel with the two bumps down is believed to look like arms crossed in prayer (the bumps being the elbows). Keep it simple and maybe even make it rhyme.
Knot Your Average Snack
  1. Sample Time! Try out different kinds of pretzels — hard, soft, flavored — and see which you like better. Add dipping sauces for additional fun, like ranch or cheese.
  2. DIY Pretzels! Find a recipe for homemade pretzels and enjoy some fun family baking while learning a bit of science.
  3. Mix it Up! Create your own snack mix! Here are some options for ingredients to add with pretzels:
    1. Salty: cheese crackers, fish crackers, bugles, melba toast, oyster crackers, nuts, tortilla chips
    2. Sweet: M&Ms, raisins, chocolate chips, Reese's Pieces, toffee, cereal, chocolate or vanilla bark, cookie frosting that hardens.
And don't forget to take pictures! Share your pretzel moments in the comments below. I'd love to hear what you did!

Thanks, Sally! I'm thinking it might even make a cute picture book idea.
