If you’ve read The Wonder of Under, you already know how Paxton used his imagination and a few recycled items to create his own adventure. Since writing this book, I’ve grown excited about upcycling as a way to spark creativity in our kids. Just like Paxton, our little ones can take everyday objects and, with a bit of imagination, turn them into something extraordinary. Whether it’s building a fort from old boxes or crafting a robot from plastic bottles, upcycling is a powerful tool to nurture creativity and teach important lessons about sustainability.
Unleash Their Imagination
We all know how important imagination is for our kids. It’s how they learn, grow, and explore the world. Upcycling is a perfect way to nurture that imaginative spark. When my grandkids take an old item and transform it into something new, it’s like watching magic happen. Suddenly, random scrap items become a multi-media picture, or toilet paper rolls transform into a pair of binoculars. It’s incredible to see them realize that possibilities are everywhere, just waiting to be discovered!

Get Crafty with Upcycling Ideas
Once your kids begin the process of creative upcycling, there is no end to the fun. Here are a few easy upcycling projects to get them started:

  • Cardboard Box Creations: Turn old boxes into everything from race cars to robot costumes. Just grab some markers and let your kids’ creativity run wild!

  • T-shirt Tote Bags: Got some old t-shirts lying around? How about making some no-sew tote bags. The kids will love being able to use something they “created” for grocery trips.

  • Bottle Cap Art: Collect bottle caps to make anything — from colorful mosaics to wall art. It’s great for developing fine motor skills too!

Start with an Upcycled Boats Activity!
Ready to dive into upcycling ?Download the “Upcycled Boat Guide," inspired by The Wonder of Under, where your kids can explore various recyclable materials to craft their own floating vessels. It’s a fun way to get them thinking creatively while learning about recycling.

So, gather those recyclable items and let the creativity flow. The only limit is your child’s imagination!
