Sometimes, a book comes along that is so delightful, it sneaks some serious learning in while making you laugh out loud. Except Antarctica by Todd Sturgell is exactly that kind of picture book. With a lovable cast of characters, a globe-trotting adventure, and a narrator who is hilariously ignored, this book is a crowd-pleaser for kids and adults alike. It's the kind of read-aloud that has preschoolers giggling and grownups chuckling at the same time. Thoughts About the Story At the heart of this story is a very persistent turtle who doesn’t quite agree with the narrator’s assertion that he and his animal friends are found on every continent... except Antarctica. What unfolds is a hilarious and increasingly chaotic journey as the turtle and his growing band of companions—who also take offense to the narrator’s limitations—decide they want to see Antarctica for themselves. Todd Sturgell deserves major kudos for crafting such a clever narrative voice; the back-and-forth between the narrator and the characters is priceless. The running gag of “...except Antarctica!” keeps young readers guessing and giggling page after page. Sturgell’s comedic timing and subtle educational twist are pitch-perfect for preschool through first grade. Thoughts About the Illustrations The illustrations, also created by Sturgill, are bright, expressive, and full of movement—perfectly capturing the growing parade of rebellious animals as they journey around the globe. From jungles to deserts and every terrain in between, each page bursts with humor and determination. Sturgell’s visuals do a fantastic job of carrying the story’s emotion and energy, especially as the animals push back against the narrator’s expectations. You can almost hear the turtle muttering “we’ll see about that...” as he marches onward! The SEL Element Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is gently woven into the story through themes of curiosity, perseverance, and collaboration. The animals' decision to follow their own path—even when told otherwise—shows young readers the value of questioning, exploring, and making decisions together. There’s also an undercurrent of respect for each character’s voice and identity, creating a story that encourages kids to listen to their own sense of wonder. The STEM Element This book may look silly on the surface (in the best possible way), but it’s packed with science! Readers learn which animals are found on which continents and the back pages include real, factual animal profiles as well as a map charting the group’s journey. It's a stealthy STEM lesson, wrapped in humor and charm. Geography, biology, and animal behavior are all explored in a way that feels effortless and engaging. Final Thoughts Except Antarctica is a standout STEM/SEL adventure picture book that’s both educational and wildly entertaining. Todd Sturgell has hit that rare, sweet spot where humor and learning go hand in hand. Whether you're reading it aloud to a class, gifting it to an animal-loving child, or adding it to a home library, this is a book that will be read again and again. Bonus points for its durability—though maybe not quite turtle-proof, as one enthusiastic reader discovered! Win a Free Copy! Want to experience the adventure for yourself?
