I’m thrilled to share that The Wonder of Under won 3rd Place in the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) KidLit Awards, with judges also naming its title as one of their favorites. For a debut, self-published picture book, this recognition is such an incredible honor. What makes this moment even sweeter is remembering how the book came to life. The story was inspired by my granddaughter, who, as a curious crawler, loved peeking under rugs and couches again and again. I jokingly called it “the wonder of under,” and soon the phrase grew into a story about imagination and discovery. I nearly gave up on publishing it because of the cost of illustrations, but for my 60th birthday, my family surprised me with a box of printed books. They had pooled their resources to hire an illustrator, and when that fell through, my daughter Andee stepped in to create the amazing artwork. With their encouragement—and the support of friends who taught me the how-tos of writing—I found the courage to launch my career as a children’s author.
And now, to see that same book honored alongside traditionally published works is beyond humbling. You can find The Wonder of Under at Fables Books in Goshen, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Walmart, Apple Books, and other major outlets. Sometimes, the simplest inspirations—like a baby crawling under a rug—can lead to the most extraordinary journeys.

Hi Cindy!! Congratulations!! My heart is so happy for you! You don’t have to enter me into a drawing (I already purchased several copies of your book and gifted them to relatives. But, I will cobtribute to your conversation of things found ‘under’ something.

He's so right! Oh my goodness, kids have an imagination! But in truth, I was at my mom's once when my daughter was a baby, and we laid her on a blanket on the floor to nap. But she disappeared! The little stinker had wriggled her way under the couch ... in her sleep.

The craziest scariest thing I ever found under my bed with a neighborhood cat! One night it chased my Maxie cat over my fence and into the house (through the kitty door), through the house, down the stairs to my basement bedroom, and under my bed! I was having a nightmare about something about to get me, and I woke up to scary sounds coming from under my bed that turned out to be a cat fight! I scared the snot out of that cat, and it shot past me, back up the stairs, through the house, and out the kitty door! lol

Oh my goodness—that sounds like a real-life horror movie meets comedy show! I can only imagine waking up to that chaos under the bed… poor Maxie, and poor you! I’m glad the intruder cat shot back out before you needed to call in reinforcements.

Haha, genius! I'm off to check under my bed! Perhaps I’ll finally get the whole gang back together. I remember when my kids were little, unmatched socks were the norm, and I secretly hoped no one was judging me too harshly. I'll enter you into the contest! Thanks for the laugh!
