The Wonder of Under Wins Third Place in the ACFW KidLit Awards

I’m thrilled to share that The Wonder of Under won 3rd Place in the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) KidLit Awards, with judges also naming its title as one of their favorites. For a debut, self-published picture book, this recognition is such an incredible honor.

What makes this moment even sweeter is remembering how the book came to life. The story was inspired by my granddaughter, who, as a curious crawler, loved peeking under rugs and couches again and again. I jokingly called it “the wonder of under,” and soon the phrase grew into a story about imagination and discovery.

I nearly gave up on publishing it because of the cost of illustrations, but for my 60th birthday, my family surprised me with a box of printed books. They had pooled their resources to hire an illustrator, and when that fell through, my daughter Andee stepped in to create the amazing artwork. With their encouragement—and the support of friends who taught me the how-tos of writing—I found the courage to launch my career as a children’s author.

And now, to see that same book honored alongside traditionally published works is beyond humbling. You can find The Wonder of Under at Fables Books in Goshen, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Walmart, Apple Books, and other major outlets.

Sometimes, the simplest inspirations—like a baby crawling under a rug—can lead to the most extraordinary journeys.

Hi Cindy!! Congratulations!! My heart is so happy for you! You don’t have to enter me into a drawing (I already purchased several copies of your book and gifted them to relatives. But, I will cobtribute to your conversation of things found ‘under’ something.

I was playing trains with my 2year old son just after his baby sister was born. When a train went under the couch and was stuck, I tried to help him problem solve by asking him what night be small enough to fit under the couch that could help retrieve his train. His answer was, ‘my baby sister?’

All my best!

He's so right! Oh my goodness, kids have an imagination! But in truth, I was at my mom's once when my daughter was a baby, and we laid her on a blanket on the floor to nap. But she disappeared! The little stinker had wriggled her way under the couch ... in her sleep.

She's still an active sleeper from what I've heard. LOL.

Thanks, Liz. You're such a blessing, and this book wouldn't have happened without your input and encouragement.

The craziest scariest thing I ever found under my bed with a neighborhood cat! One night it chased my Maxie cat over my fence and into the house (through the kitty door), through the house, down the stairs to my basement bedroom, and under my bed! I was having a nightmare about something about to get me, and I woke up to scary sounds coming from under my bed that turned out to be a cat fight! I scared the snot out of that cat, and it shot past me, back up the stairs, through the house, and out the kitty door! lol

Anyway, congratulations on the award!

Oh my goodness—that sounds like a real-life horror movie meets comedy show! I can only imagine waking up to that chaos under the bed… poor Maxie, and poor you! I’m glad the intruder cat shot back out before you needed to call in reinforcements.

Thanks so much for the congratulations—I think I’ll stick to socks under my bed from now on, and stay away from catfights if at all possible.

You're in the drawing!

Hi Cindy -- Congratulations on your award for The Wonder of Under -- looking forward to sharing it with my great grandchildren!
I was stretching as far as I could under the bed with my vacuum. All of a sudden, I heard, "THOOMP!" Something was stuck in the hose, as the vacuum whined. Lo and behold -- there was a dusty old sock half-in and half-out of the hose. I think I solved the age-old problem of unmatched pairs of socks. Somehow they make their way under beds!

Haha, genius! I'm off to check under my bed! Perhaps I’ll finally get the whole gang back together. I remember when my kids were little, unmatched socks were the norm, and I secretly hoped no one was judging me too harshly. I'll enter you into the contest! Thanks for the laugh!

Hello Cindy:

Congratulations on this special book. I just found out about you as an author minutes ago. I am in Taylors, SC and have authored a few children's books as well as a couple adult books.
I am looking for a self-publishing company and wondered if you can recommend your publisher. I am in the process of doing a couple more books and anxious to get them on the market!
Thank you for your time and anticipated cooperation. God bless you for having such a talent! Marie DellaValle

Hi Marie! It's so great to connect with you here. How can I look up you and your books?

I am an indie publisher, so I published on my own. I do, however, know someone who gives concierge services to writers. Is this what you're looking for?
