STEM + SEL: The Dynamic Duo
Every great superhero needs a sidekick. Batman has Robin. Buzz has Woody. And in the world of learning, STEM has SEL. Together, they make an unbeatable team.

STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—helps kids discover how the world works. It’s the power of asking questions, solving problems, and exploring everything from baking cookies to launching rockets.

SEL—Social-Emotional Learning—helps kids discover how they work in the world. It gives them the super-skills of empathy, resilience, teamwork, and kindness.

On their own, they’re strong. But when STEM and SEL team up, they become a storytelling superpower. Let's talk about how, together, they can conquer the world.

Why STEM Matters: Brains with Super Strength
STEM gives kids the tools to become inventors, explorers, and world-changers. It trains their brains for action:
  • Building block towers? That’s engineering.
  • Watching ants march in a line? That’s science.
  • Counting Halloween candy? That’s math in action.
With STEM, kids unlock powers of creativity and problem-solving that help them soar into the future.

Why SEL Matters: Hearts with Heroic Courage
But every hero knows that strength alone isn’t enough—it takes courage, compassion, and teamwork to save the day. That’s where SEL shines.
  • Sharing crayons with a friend shows empathy.
  • Rebuilding a toppled tower shows resilience.
  • Cheering for others shows kindness.
SEL equips kids with the inner powers they need to navigate friendships, feelings, and challenges.

Storytelling with Superpowers: STEM + SEL Together
So, what happens when STEM and SEL join forces in a story? You get adventures that are both brain-smart and heart-smart.
  • STEM answers, “How does the world work?”
  • SEL answers, “How do I work in the world?”
Together, they create storylines where kids can see themselves as heroes—curious, capable, and courageous.

Why I Write STEM + SEL Picture Books
This is exactly why I write picture books that weave STEM and SEL together. My stories, such as The Wonder of Under and Remmy’s Sticky Situation, are designed to awaken curiosity, spark imagination, and build emotional resilience.

I want kids to walk away from my books with the powers of wonder and wisdom—ready to tackle the big questions of the world and the big feelings of the heart.
